What lymph actually is
Lymph starts life as blood plasma. As blood passes through your capillaries, pressure pushes a small amount of fluid out through the vessel walls into the surrounding tissue, where it bathes your cells and delivers oxygen and nutrients. The immune role
Every lymph node is a checkpoint. Lymph enters through afferent vessels and percolates slowly through a mesh packed with lymphocytes and macrophages, which identify and destroy bacteria, viruses and abnormal cells before the fluid continues on.
This is why nodes in your neck swell when you have a throat infection: they are actively proliferating immune cells in response to what they have detected. It is also why an undiagnosed, persistent, hard or painless swollen node needs medical assessment rather than massage.
What happens when it does not cope
Two situations to distinguish clearly.
Overload in a healthy system. The plumbing works, there is simply more fluid than it is clearing at that moment. Causes include long periods of sitting or standing, heat, hormonal changes, high salt intake, pregnancy and long flights.
