What is pregnancy massage?
Pregnancy massage, also known as prenatal massage, is a specialist treatment adapted to the needs of expectant mothers. It addresses the physical changes and discomforts of pregnancy, including back pain, swollen ankles, sciatic nerve pain, and general fatigue.
Not all massage therapists are trained to work with pregnant clients. Therapists who offer pregnancy massage hold a specific prenatal qualification in addition to their general massage training, and are trained to use appropriate positioning, pressure, and techniques that are safe at each stage of pregnancy.
Is pregnancy massage safe?
Pregnancy massage is considered safe from the second trimester (around 14 weeks) onwards when performed by a qualified prenatal therapist. The first trimester is generally avoided due to the heightened risk of miscarriage during this period, though this is a precautionary position rather than evidence of massage causing harm.
What to expect
Your therapist will ask about your pregnancy, any complications, and whether your midwife or GP has raised any concerns. You will typically be positioned on your side, supported by pillows, rather than lying face down. The pressure will be gentler than a standard massage. Many clients find pregnancy massage deeply beneficial for sleep and overall comfort.
